The Moroccan north resembles very much the south of Spain, a succession of dry straw-coloured hills, and sparse vegetation. We drove down from Ceuta to Tetouan, we were meant to go to Al-Hoceima, I thought I wanted some beach action (sorry). But then, as it was Paul's turn to drive, and I was flipping through the Lonely PLanet, it suddenly became clear that Chefchaouen would be a much better option...

Chefchaouen (or Chaouen, meaning "peaks"), in the Rif mountains, is one of the capitals for Kif smoking (and growing) but it must also be said that it is one of the most endearing places. Its simple beauty, its stunning location in the Rif mountains, its relaxed population and the gorgeous blues painted on its whitewashed make it a delightful place. I could also add that, for 130 dirhams (13€), we had an en-suite bathroom... (see boxed text on Moroccan hotels).

I'd like to have pictures of our arrival there, as I remember it very vividly. We stopped as soon as we spotted a "Banque du Maroc" establishment (still didn't have any dirhams) to change money. Paul went to get it, and I waited in the car. First day in a strange country, you can imagine my state of mind (needless to say he was in there for more than an hour, Moroccan bureaucracy can be rather slow). We were parked on a passing street, at the top of another - very steep this one - street covered in market stalls. It was market day, on such days, the whole population of the mountains gathers in Chefchaouen to buy and sell. It was simply amazing the colours, the smells (most of them very pleasant) and the life that oozed from this place.

feels like uncovering some magical secret...
