The second part of our visit, once we'd climbed up and down the great pyramid, we proceeded with the rest of the site which was, if not as spectacular, no less interesting. The main experience was to climb up the inside of the pyramid, through the "túnel", a pyramid-shaped narrow staircase that enables you to climb inside El Castillo, giving access to the throne. The staircase in VERY narrow, damp and only lit thanks to a few neon-lights on the walls, the atmosphere is stifling in there, and it can feel claustrophobic - a girl came out in tears, screaming, while we were waiting for our turn (groups of 10 people maximum are allowed simultaneously). |

climbing up the stairs was a slightly choking experience for our LUFC fan...
Chacmool - the Mayan rain god, behind, there was the statue of a Jaguar with jade eyes but we could hardly distinguish it because it was rather dark
El Osario
coming out of yet another tunnel inside one of the monuments
El Caracol - thus named because of the "snail" shape of its interior spiral staircase - the windows in its dome are aligned with the appearance of certain stars at specific dates
the back of the building
Akab Dzib
"La Iglesia" - part of the group Edificio de las Monjas
El Cenote Sagrado - a sacrificing well
a pottery seller who nicely accepted to be in the picture - the potteries were lovely with shiny colours and striking designs, but difficult to bring back in one piece when you're flying with 'Absolute Assholes'
the first iguana we met - and many more were to follow
